The Kanopy app is available for Apple TV 4K and Apple TV (4th generation). If you are unsure of which model you own, you can check here. To download the app, go to the App Store on your Apple TV, search for Kanopy and install the app.
When you first open the Kanopy app, you’ll be presented with two options:
- If you’re a new user and need to create an account, select “Get Started”
- If you’re a returning user and already have a Kanopy account, select “Log In”
New Users: Get Started
In order to play films, you’ll first need to create a new Kanopy account. Follow the instructions on the “Get Started” screen:
- Go to www.kanopy.com/tv on your computer or mobile device
- Enter the code on your TV
- Follow the steps to create your account
Once your account has been created, your TV screen will automatically refresh and log you into the app.
Returning Users: Log In
If you have an existing Kanopy account, select “Log In” to log into your account.
Log In to Kanopy using Email & Password
If you already have an email address and password associated with your Kanopy account, you can log in directly from your device.
- Enter your email address
- Enter your password
- Select “Log In”

Link Your Kanopy Account
- Go to kanopy.com/link on your computer or mobile device
- Log into your Kanopy account
- Enter the code on your TV screen
Once your account is linked, your TV screen should automatically refresh. To generate a new code, simply return to the previous screen and select “Get Started” again.
Frequently Asked Questions
What Apple TV devices can I use to access Kanopy?
Kanopy can only be used on devices that have access to an app store (4th generation Apple TV and newer). Your device will need to be running at least tvOS 10.2.
What Dashboard features are available, and how do I access these?
You will be able to access your Watchlist and Memberships through the Apple TV app. To access, go to the Settings located at the top of your screen. If you do not see this section, click on the Menu button on your remote.
Where do I enter the linking code?
To enter your linking code, go to kanopy.com/link, or select “Link Your Device” from the Kanopy iOS or Android app. If you are not signed into your account, you will be prompted to log in before you will be able to enter the code. In addition, your account will need to be linked to a subscribing library in order for you to successfully link your device.
How can I access my other membership(s)?
Go to the Settings (located at the top of your screen) and select “Membership”. The membership that you are currently using on the channel will be listed here. Choose “Select another library” to display a list of your other membership(s). Select your library name to load this membership to your Apple TV.
Can I add multiple Kanopy accounts at a time to my Apple TV?
Only 1 Kanopy account can be linked to your Apple TV at a time. If you would like to access another account on your Apple TV, follow the instructions to log out of your account.
Can I link my account to multiple Apple TVs?
Yes! You can link your account to as many Apple TVs as you’d like.
How do I log out of my account?
Go to Settings and select “Sign out of my Kanopy account”
How do I know if a film is closed captioned?
On a film’s details page, “CC” will appear below the title and to the right of the star rating if the title is closed captioned.
How do I access closed captions/subtitles?
Swipe down on the trackpad portion of the remote while the film is playing. A menu at the top of your TV screen will appear which will include a section for captions/subtitles. Navigate over to this section and enable the captions/subtitles.
How do I add films to my Watchlist?
Enter the Kanopy channel and select a film to open up the film’s details. Press the down arrow so that “+ Add to Watchlist” is selected then press OK to add the film to your Watchlist. Press OK again if you would like to remove the film.
Where do I access my Watchlist?
Your Watchlist can be accessed from the menu at the top of the page.
How do I know how many play credits I have remaining?
The number of play credits you have remaining for the month will appear at the top right of your TV screen. To learn more about how these play credits work, go here.
How do I find films I’ve already viewed?
A Continue Watching section is coming soon - stay tuned! In the meantime, you can find your previously viewed films from the desktop version of the site or via the iOS app.
Can I access Kanopy on Apple TV if I do not belong to a subscribing library?
In order to access the films on Kanopy, you will need a Kanopy account that has been linked to a subscribing library. To find out if your library participates, check here.
If you have an older generation Apple TV, you can view Kanopy via Airplay. To do this:
- Select a film from the Kanopy iOS app and press play.
- Select the Airplay icon at the top right of the screen.
- Choose the Apple TV you would like to connect to.
- Once the film begins playing on your TV select Done on your iOS device.
You will be able to control closed caption and subtitles (if available) using the icon to the right of the Airplay icon.
To stop Airplay, select the Airplay icon again and select your mobile device.
