Watching Kanopy on Android phones and tablets
The Kanopy app is available in the Google Play Store for supported Android phones and tablets. To use the app, you'll need a Kanopy account with an active library or academic membership.
If you already have a Kanopy account, select Log In when you first open the app. See our frequently asked questions (below) for more help using the Kanopy app.
If you don't have a Kanopy account yet, select one of the following for help creating a Kanopy account in the app:
- Tap Get Started, then Find Library.
- To find a library near you, share your location when prompted. If you'd prefer not to share your location, you can search for your library manually by library name, city, or zip code.
- Enter your library card number and password/PIN (if required), then tap Next.Note: If you get an error message, see our article about common errors when adding your library card to your Kanopy account.
- Create your Kanopy account. You can use your Google login or enter your email address and create a password. Your password must be at least 6 characters.
- After creating your account, you’ll receive a verification email. Click the link in the email to verify your email address.
- Tap Get Started, then Find University.
- Search for your university or college and select it from the results.
- You'll be redirected to your school’s login screen. Follow the prompts to log in. Note: If your school authenticates using VPN, ensure that you've logged in through the VPN.
- Create your Kanopy account. You can use your Google login or enter your email address and create a password. Your password must be at least 6 characters.
- After creating your account, you’ll receive a verification email. Click the link in the email to verify your email address.
Frequently asked questions
You can access your watchlist and library memberships through the app. To access your watchlist, tap My Lists at the bottom of the screen, then My Watchlist. Tap Continue Watching to find films you haven't finished.
To access your memberships, tap More at the bottom of the screen, then Memberships.
You'll need an internet connection to play films. They can't be downloaded to your device.
Tap More at the bottom of the screen and select Settings. Then, switch the Cellular Data toggle off. When this setting is off, you won't be able to stream films in the app unless you're connected to Wi-Fi.
Go to More > Settings and select Video Quality. Then, select Auto to play videos at the highest quality possible, or select Basic to play videos at a lower resolution. Learn more about why a video may be poor quality.
While the film is playing, tap . Or tap , then tap Subtitles and select a language. Some films may not offer subtitles or closed captions.
